IYPT is often called the “world cup of physics” (honest – google it!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2027 Tournament competition will take place in the Science Faculty of the University of Auckland between July 5th and 12. It’s a busy programme of competition rounds (physics fights) and seeing some of NZ’s exciting innovation and technology opportunities. We expect nearly 200 students from over 35 countries to participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IYPT in New Zealand is organised by the NZ Young Physicists’ Trust, registered charity CC62496. We run an annual national competition for school teams that is based on seven of the seventeen IYPT problems. The Trust also uses these IYPT problems in a competition for individual students that selects a five student NZ Representative team that competes in the International Young Physicists\u2019 Tournament, (IYPT) every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problems for IYPT 2027 are published here. <\/a>The seven selected for New Zealand Tournaments will be announced in mid-August<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Trust ran the national FUSION design competition asking high school students to design the tournament logo for the 40th International Young Physicists’ Tournament (IYPT) being held in Auckland in July 2027.Congratulations to Nicholas Yeung of Macleans College, Auckland who won the FUSION design competition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicholas crammed so much meaning into what is a very clear and clean design.
\u2022 a continuous line design to evoke an oscilloscope’s trace.
\u2022 The harbour bridge and sky tower landmarks.
\u2022 A sailboat silhouette for the city of sails.
\u2022 A ‘wave duality’ of sea and physics waveform.
\u2022 global competitors navigating to our far shores by following the southern cross stars.
\u2022 Colours inspired by the New Zealand Flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicholas wins a $150 pressie card as one of our five finalists plus a winner’s prize of a digital graphics drawing pad and a day spent with Onfire seeing the design industry at work and his design turned into a branding pack. Added to that his design will get used and acknowledged globally for the tournament – not a bad thing to note on his CV!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benjy was part of the 2022 team that only competed in the alternative online IYPT due to Covid travel restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He’s making up for it this year as one of two team leaders escorting this year’s Team NZ to Zurich, Switzerland in July. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
