Researching individual problems may reinforce and delve deeper into curriculum topics. Or introduce entirely new areas of physics! It is also good for your students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-contrast-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cf4b987f07f13d9f9c166cb910003fb4\">Many students find the practical work deepends their understanding of how forces interact and energy trasfers.  It has been known to change career aspirations as it did for <a href=\"https:\/\/iypt.org.nz\/?page_id=1502\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1502\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">alumnus Luke Roeven<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participating in IYPT gives students real life research experience and something to discuss in University entrance applications. Please <a href=\"https:\/\/iypt.org.nz\/?page_id=1804\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1804\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contact us<\/a> if you have another!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-1-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-8366c1c806ec85d74759a374a143475e wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>As a Teacher, what do I need to do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your role is that of mentor and facilitator. There is no formal teaching required and absolutely no lessons to plan. In fact, you need do relatively little, although your students will find your support and encouragement invaluable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Individual students applying to be in the rep team do not need to involve a teacher at all, although we will inform you if they complete their entry. Successful teams also have to be self-motivated and resourceful to work independently and outside of class time. For a school team of three students, you must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ensure the team&#8217;s entry admin is correctly completed within the deadlines, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your school i spaying the entry fee, arrange to have it paid in line with your purchasing policies. The team fee in 2027 is $145 plus GST, and,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accompany your team (or arrange for a suitably qualified replacement) to the tournament and act as a juror on the day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many established NZYPT schools run a &#8220;Physics club&#8221; throughout the year. to work on the problems Contact us &#8211; we offer mentoring to teachers new to the tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-1-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-5783026d70392fcc25b50de5cecde516 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What do my students need to do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First research a problem or two between now and the relevant deadline. They can start as soon as they wish after the seven problems for NZ 2027 are announced on August 15th 2026. There is a separate section of this website for Students that you might find helpful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, at the team tournament, teams will present their research, and challenge that of opposing teams in a series of three physics &#8216;fights&#8217; or matches. Each team needs about five solutions between them to do well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Individuals only entering the rep team selection process need only have one solution prepared, They submit a video of their solution as the first step of the selection process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-1-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-1b49e503cca77ba2881e8b447b6d9126 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What is a physics match?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A physics match is a very structured discussion of one team&#8217;s research into a problem. questioned by a second team. <a href=\"https:\/\/iypt.org.nz\/?page_id=247\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"247\">Find the full explanation here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-1-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-d5a4d6daec3b38c78944dc5b145f5e74 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What if I don\u2019t know the answers?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You won&#8217;t know the answers. There are ono right answers or complete solutions to these open-ended problems. Students must research phenomena and present their own conclusions in the tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-1-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-ec7bff328037395bc055a030b2c1713e wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How many exams do students need to take?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None. This is NOT an examination based competition. Not least because nobody does know &#8216;the answers&#8217; in advance. Students must research and present their own findings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-1-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-20abd4eaa1021864c32536c4859cb3ba wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What if a team gets outside help?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is all part of being resourceful. Getting outside help \u2013 from books, the internet, advice from experts, loan of equipment and facilities \u2013 is all part of getting a solution and it is encouraged! However, in a Physics fight the team must present a solution to the problem and then defend it without internet access. If they don\u2019t understand the solution they have just presented, or if they didn\u2019t do the experimental work themselves, this is painfully obvious to the jury, and the team will score poorly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-1-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-0e900623a179abb2ab5988f44c9f1e5a wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can students use AI?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes. But if they rely on it to tell them the answers, they will be found out in competition and loose marks for experimental technique, data analysis and strength of conclusions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A good solution presents lots of practical experimentation to get reliable data to illustrate (or not) relevant physics theory. Experiments don&#8217;t always work first time and may need refining. Real life has error bars!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-1-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-6f1f53442fe4829489a9cd1e43e3e95e wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What if my team faces a top team in the first round?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a good match both the problem reporters and opponents score highly. You are not there to &#8220;beat the competition&#8221; in the debate. Teams that face good opponents usually score well in that same fight. Having good physics to question or defend brings out the best in both teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-1-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-26ab769c7d5a6299106e29bc93d67a89 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who can compete?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All students attending a secondary school throughout the year of the competition can take part. This includes students taking the odd tertiary paper but excludes any attending university full time. Usually, participants are working in Year 12 or 13 classes, just so they know enough physics to get started. But there are no age limits and in 2025 the team competition was won by a year 12 team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NB: To be considered for the New Zealand representative team, students must be NZ citizens or residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-1-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-5922678697c9eaaa35f53575297b6394 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Isn\u2019t this a competition just for the occasional genius?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No. Students need to have learnt some advanced high school physics and during their research they will learn more. Genius however is definitely not required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a competition which rewards resourcefulness, communication and scientific inquiry. Being brilliant at physics, on its own will not win a physics match. The need for teamwork, practical experiments, the ability to answer and debate questions &#8220;on your feet&#8221; (without internet access!) as well as having good problem-solving skills are key attributes for any student who wants to do well.
