The Trust is thrilled to invite the world’s brightest young physicists to Auckland in July 2027 for the 40th International Young Physicists’ Tournament. This festival of physics brings nearly 200 elite students from 35 countries to New Zealand to debate their research findings in discussions inspired by the viva voce processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The competition will be held at the University of Auckland’s City Campus between July 5th and 12th, followed by the IOC meeting July 12th to 14th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you help?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hosting IYPT is a big undertaking for a small charity. We need speakers, volunteers and funders. Can you help showcase New Zealand to these exceptional young people? Supporters will signal their commitment to STEM education and excellence to the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sponsor a problem, an excursion or a meal during the Tournament. Volunteer to help us with admin or communications. Showcase your research and technology as speaker to inspire the students. What’s so good about IYPT?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

IYPT is research based. There are no written exams and students must do far more than repeat facts. and apply algorithms. It teaches real-world skills to compliment academic qualifications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigations take months, challenging students to move beyond the ‘recipe box’ practicals of the classroom. To make decisions based on actual results and how they compare to theoretical predictions. Take a look at this outline investigation process.<\/strong><\/a> It takes determination, resilience and the willingness to follow where your discoveries lead you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tournament demands teamwork and clear science communication. Students must think on their feet; publicly testing the depth of their understanding without internet access or AI support. Clarity and conciseness are required to show months on research in only 12 minutes. Your teammates need to have your back while you focus on the discussion, preparing for the next discussion stage and identifying issues in time to correct them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

IYPT is internationally recognised<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 2013, IYPT was awarded the medal of The International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) “in recognition of its inspiring and wide-ranging contribution to physics education that has touched many lives and countries, over the past 25 years”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today IYPTis sponsored by organisations known for their commitment to recruiting the brightest young talent. Jane Street International, Wincent, Non-Trivial and Ellison Scholars all value IYPT enough to fund it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2026 four of the nineteen Ellison undergraduate scholarships were awarded to IYPT participants, including New Zealand’s own Jason pictured here. That is more than any other international school science competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In New Zealand, five of our alumni have expanded and applied their IYPT research to win the Prime Minister’s future scientist prize. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many more have founded their own companies or work in leading edge technology firms like Rocket Labs and OpenStar. Well over 70% end up in some form of engineering.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
